What does the law say?
The right to free workshop choice is anchored in the EU block exemption for motor vehicles (Regulation 461/2010), part of the EEA agreement. In 2013 the Norwegian Competition Authority confirmed – in its report "Din bil – ditt verkstedsvalg" – that free workshop choice must not affect the factory warranty. An importer cannot reject a warranty claim simply because the car was serviced at an independent workshop, as long as the service followed the manufacturer's specifications and is documented.
Note: The actual repair of a fault covered by the new-car warranty is still carried out and paid for by the dealer. We are happy to help you assess whether a fault should be reported as a warranty claim – and take care of everything else.
