Short answer: The most common cause is the battery. Listen to what the car does: if everything is completely dead, suspect the battery or its terminals. If it just clicks, the battery is too weak or the starter motor is tired. If the engine cranks without firing, it is usually not the battery — then it is fuel, ignition or sensors, and that is a workshop job.

Step 1: Read the symptoms

Completely dead — no lights, no response: Battery, main fuse or terminal connections.
Click-click, but the engine does not turn: The battery is too weak to turn the starter, or the starter motor is worn.
The engine cranks briskly but does not fire: Rarely the battery — think fuel, ignition, sensors or immobiliser.
Immobiliser/key symbol in the display: The car does not recognise the key — try the spare key, or hold the key against the marked start point.

Step 2: Check the simple things first

Are the battery terminals clean and tight? Corroded or loose terminals give exactly the same symptom as a dead battery.
Is the car in P (automatic), and is the clutch/brake fully pressed? Many cars refuse to start otherwise.
Has the steering lock engaged? Turn the wheel gently while turning the key.

Step 3: Jump-starting — done correctly

Red lead to positive (dead car first, then helper car), black to negative on the helper car and then to an unpainted metal point on the dead car. Let the helper car run for a few minutes before trying. A jump-starter pack is even simpler and safer for the electronics. If the car starts: do not switch it off right away — and have the battery tested the same week.

What we see most often at the workshop

The starting problems we get in peak at the first cold spell, and the pattern is almost always the same: a battery that has been fading for a while, combined with short trips that never properly recharge it. A battery test takes minutes and reveals the problem before it strands you. If the engine cranks without firing, however, it takes diagnostic fault reading to find the cause — guesswork is just expensive there.

In what order do I connect jump leads?

Red lead first: to the positive terminal of the dead car, then to the positive terminal of the helper car. Then the black lead to the negative terminal of the helper car, and finally to an unpainted metal point in the engine bay of the dead car — not directly on the negative terminal. Disconnect in reverse order. Always follow the owner’s manual; some cars have dedicated jump-start points.

Can jump-starting damage the electronics in modern cars?

Done wrongly, yes — modern cars carry a lot of sensitive electronics. Use the correct order, keep the ignition off on both cars while connecting, and preferably use a jump-starter pack with protection instead of leads between two cars. If in doubt, it is safer to get help.

Will the battery recharge itself once I drive?

Only partially. A short drive does not replace the energy a start consumes, especially in winter with heating and lights on. If the car needed a jump-start, have the battery tested and properly charged — otherwise you will likely be stuck again the next cold morning.
